About Us Mount Holly

Plymouth

Mount Holly is located in the southeast corner of Rutland County.

It is comprised of the 1781 area known as Jackson’s Gore, and the

land added from the Towns of Wallingford and Ludlow to establish

the 1792 charter granted by the then new State of Vermont. It is

also bordered by Weston, Plymouth, Mount Tabor and Shrewsbury.

Many early settlers arrived by way of the Crown Point Military

Road following the Revolutionary War. The roads halfway camp

was located between Hortonville and Proctor Hill, on what is now

the Perry Farm. The main settlements were Mechanicsville ( now

Belmont Village ), Hortonville, Tarbellville, and Healdville. The

latter is the home of the well-known Crowley Cheese Factory.

Many are not aware that Mount Holly also played an important

role in Vermont’s railroad history. In 1848 a mammoth tusk and

tooth were discovered while building a track bed. And in December,

1849 a ceremony was held near Summit Station to drive the last

spike that connected the Burlington line to Boston. Recently the tusk

was returned on permanent loan from the University of Vermont to

                      our Community Historical Museum.

In 2009, the Museum opened the renovated Perkins House on the

village green in Belmont with improved display and storage areas.

We continue to display our farm and tool collections in the Will White

Blacksmith Shop. To learn more about the Sunday programs offered

in July and August, Mount Holly history or village tours, call

                      802-259-2460 or 259-2646.

Mount Holly is not only the hometown of 2006 Olympic Gold Medal

snowboarder Hannah Teter, but a community that has much to offer

residents and visitors. Whether your interest is history, library programs,

the farmers market, music on the green, or enjoying Star Lake and Lake

Ninevah, you can find it all in the vibrant little town of Mount Holly.
